Sailing Course: Sailing is a skill to learn and master, so let us teach you the theory. This course teaches you everything from speaking like a sailor to understanding the "rules of the road" at sea.
This module covers the technical words and terms used in the forthcoming sailing training videos, designed to expand your knowledge and understanding to prepare you to enter the maritime industry.
This module aims to introduce you to the Collision Regulations 'COLREGs' focusing on the main rules needed to sail a vessel safely in hours of daylight. However, the sooner you begin to familiarise yourself with the COLREG’s and begin to learn and understand them, the safer you will be at sea, and the faster you will excel in your maritime career.
Passage/voyage planning is the procedure used to develop a complete description of the vessel's voyage from departure to arrival or ‘berth to berth’. Passage plans provide all the necessary information to navigate the vessel safely. Therefore, it should be comprehensive, detailed, and easy to understand.
The IALA Maritime Buoyage System is in place to improve navigational safety and to act as a barrier to dangers. When entering or exiting a port, vessels need to understand where the safe water is to navigate and the potential hazards to avoid collisions. To achieve this, we use aids to navigation; these may be buoys, lighthouses, lightships, or other fixed or floating devices.

Safety Course
Safety Course: Safety is the most important aspect of any vessel, as quick actions are required in an emergency. This course aims to provide you with the basic theoretical knowledge of safety at sea, ensuring your awareness on any vessel you board.
Awareness is the first step towards safety at sea, not just for you but for all those on board the vessel, for the vessel itself, and the environment. Knowledge of your role onboard, not just in an emergency, is essential to developing and maintaining a good safety culture. Preparation for the correct response to an emergency situation cannot start soon enough… so let’s get you started.
Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) refers to all equipment on board a vessel that protects human life at sea. Appliances include lifeboats, lifebuoys, life-jackets, life rafts, and many others to be used by passengers and crew in case of emergency to protect their lives at sea.
One of the primary causes of accidents at sea is fire. FFE refers to all equipment on board a vessel that protects human life at sea from fire. Prevention is always best, so in this awareness course, you will learn and understand the basics of fire, including its common causes onboard vessels. However, in the event of a fire, it is essential that you are aware of the detection systems and the FFE available onboard your vessel to ensure a quick and appropriate response.

The More You Give Back.
Is bigger really better when starting your career?
The allure of working on a superyacht exudes glamour, opulence, and the opportunity to cater to ultra-high net worth clients,
which are the drawing cards for many newcomers to the industry. However, what is not often recognised is that there is limited
opportunity for growth, or progression, as crew are most often compartmentalised in a specific role, and task within a
department.
When it comes to starting a career, the notion of "bigger is better" is not always what is best for those who are serious about a
professional career in the luxury yacht industry. Starting on a smaller yacht provides a unique opportunity to gain
comprehensive knowledge of the tasks and responsibilities in all departments.
On a smaller vessel, individuals are required to work across multiple departments and perform a variety of tasks, which allows
for a well-rounded understanding of the requirements of the industry. The hands-on experience offered on smaller yachts
enables candidates to develop a strong skill set and adaptability which, prepares them for future challenges in their career.
So, while bigger yachts may have more immediate appeal, the all-round knowledge and experience gained on smaller yachts can be
invaluable long term — helping serious candidates build confidence, adaptability, and progression potential faster.

“Doing the PCCP modules before joining the yacht helped me a lot. I already knew the basic words, safety rules, and how the departments work, so when I stepped on board for the first time, I wasn't as nervous and could focus on learning the job.
Having the courses available all the time is also useful. If I don't understand something on the boat, I can check the module and learn it quickly. It makes things clearer, helps me learn faster, and builds my confidence. It even makes me enjoy my work more because I know I can always find the answers I need.”
Christiaan Scheepers Junior Crew
“The most significant aspect is that some tasks onboard can be very dangerous and expensive if done incorrectly. In that sense, the PCCP modules are invaluable. The operational drills ensure that even a new crew member can perform their duties without endangering themselves or the vessel. Although I use this training on a catamaran, the fundamental knowledge it provides can be applied to any type of yacht.
I still reference the modules often, as I haven't memorized them all. The competition in this industry is growing rapidly, with many people seeking a career change, so versatility is key. It comes down to comprehensive knowledge of all departments. This apprenticeship exposes us to different levels of responsibility, which supports rapid growth and steadily develops the mindset of a captain. All of this starts by building a solid base with the PCCP.”
Jessica Prinsloo PCCP Apprentice
“The PCCP courses provided me with a strong foundation and a clear understanding of what is expected in the yachting industry. The depth of knowledge I gained helped me feel well equipped and prepared before joining a vessel.
Now working onboard, I can confidently say that the information from the PCCP courses has helped me feel comfortable, professional, and confident in the workplace. Being able to refer back to the courses has also helped me maintain consistency, build certainty in my role, and uphold industry standards.”
Cayla Groenewald PCCP Apprentice
“I honestly think the PCCP courses are incredibly valuable, especially for anyone new to yachting. They provide a real understanding of the industry before you even step onboard. Learning about products, equipment, and onboard expectations beforehand makes a huge difference and helps build confidence from the start.
I also really appreciate having continued access to the courses while working onboard. Starting out can feel like information overload, so being able to go back and review the modules at any time is extremely helpful and makes the learning process feel far more manageable.”
Rogan Pretorius PCCP Apprentice
“Completing the PCCP modules before joining a yacht really helped me understand the basics of how yachts and departments operate, which made stepping onboard for the first time far less overwhelming. I was already familiar with key terminology and general expectations, so I felt more confident from the very start.
Having continued access to the courses while working onboard has also been extremely helpful. The modules have made it easier to learn more quickly, clear up confusion, and connect real onboard experiences with the theory, especially as I’ve gained more hands-on experience over time.”
Ryan Ennis PCCP Apprentice
“I found the PCCP modules extremely useful both before joining a vessel and throughout my apprenticeship. Completing them beforehand helped me understand the different departments onboard, which made settling in much easier when I first joined. I already had a basic understanding of how everything worked and what was expected of me.
Having access to the courses throughout my apprenticeship also helped me learn more quickly. Being able to revisit topics when something wasn’t clear reduced confusion and reinforced what I was learning onboard. Overall, PCCP gave me a solid foundation and helped me feel far more confident as I developed in the industry.”
Nicholas Paul PCCP Apprentice
“The PCCP modules were extremely useful in helping me orient myself and build a strong knowledge base before stepping onboard. Because of this, I never felt like I was being dropped into the deep end when I first joined a vessel.
Throughout my apprenticeship, the modules have continued to serve as a valuable reference point whenever I’ve been unsure about something. They remain a reliable source of information and guidance and have played an important role in supporting my learning and confidence onboard.”
